Critical Minerals: The ASX Investment Theme that is here to Stay
Critical minerals have become one of the most important investment themes in the world and here is why this trend is not going away anytime soon.
Global demand for critical minerals has risen a lot in recent years because of growth in electric vehicles, renewable energy, defence technology and advanced manufacturing.
The Australian Government has defined a critical mineral as a metallic or non-metallic element which is not only essential for modern technology, economies or national security but also has supply chains that may face disruption.
These minerals are used in advanced products such as mobile phones, fibre optic cables, semiconductors, defence systems, aerospace equipment and medical devices.
Lithium is used for batteries while rare earth elements are used for EV motors and wind turbines.
Nickel is important for high energy density batteries while cobalt is used for battery cathodes.
Graphite is used for battery anodes and copper is important for electrification and grid infrastructure.
This rising demand gives these commodities strategic importance and government policy support but also creates potential for large returns when supply becomes tight.
Large investments in data centres, electrification and infrastructure are resource intensive which is increasing long-term demand for copper, aluminium, silver, platinum and energy resources.
Geopolitical events also affect this sector because conflicts in the Middle East can disrupt global energy supply chains and push countries to focus on domestic energy security.
For example, about 20% of global oil and gas exports pass through the Strait of Hormuz which shows the vulnerability of global energy markets.
Many countries may invest more in nuclear power and domestic energy production in the future which will increase demand for uranium, copper and other critical materials used in energy infrastructure.
Investors who want exposure to this theme can use ASX listed ETFs which provide diversified exposure to global critical minerals companies.
The Betashares Energy Transition Metals ETF (ASX: XMET) and Global X Green Metal Miners ETF (ASX: GMTL) will provide exposure to global producers of copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite, manganese, silver and rare earth elements.
Overall, Critical minerals is one of the most important long-term investment trends because modern economies, energy systems and defence technologies are highly dependent on these resources.
