For investors who want risk adjusted exposure to the insurance sector, the decision comes down to whether QBE or Suncorp offers the better opportunity at current prices.

QBE Insurance Group Limited (ASX: QBE)

is a large and globally diversified insurance provider with operations across Australia Pacific, North America and International markets.

This broad geographic footprint allows the group to balance catastrophe exposure and economic risk across regions.

In its September 2025 quarter update, QBE reported continued strong momentum in gross written premiums with year-to-date premium growth of 6% on a constant currency basis driven by sustained demand in International and North America.

A key development during the period was the announcement of a sizeable $450 million on-market share buyback.

QBE currently has a market capitalisation of around $30 billion and generates solid underwriting and investment returns across its diversified portfolio.

The group reaffirmed its FY25 outlook with a targeted combined operating ratio of around 92.5% and return on equity expected to be in the high teens while offering an attractive income profile as current annual dividend yield is 4.73% supported by a diversified earnings base.

Suncorp Group Limited (ASX: SUN)

is a large but more Australia focused insurer which means its heavier domestic exposure makes the business more sensitive to Australian natural disaster losses when compared to QBE.

The company experienced a challenging five-month period leading into November 2025 which was driven by elevated natural hazard losses across multiple weather events in Australia and placed pressure on near-term earnings.

December was quieter in terms of weather events which provided some relief and helped improve momentum heading into the second half of the financial year.

The company has a current market capitalisation of $18.98 billion and has continued to invest in pricing discipline and reinsurance optimisation which is intended to improve resilience against future volatility.
For FY25, Suncorp delivered cash earnings of $1.49 billion and net profit after tax of $1.82 billion while current annual dividend yield is 6.39%.
